What is Coolsculpting?

In this post, we will run through all the key details relating to Coolsculpting, including how it works, who it is suitable for, areas of the body it can target and also the alternatives.

Coolsculpting is a hugely popular, FDA approved treatment used to tackle deposits of fat in specific regions.

The process is non-surgical and non-invasive and yet it leads to permanent results, the fat cells killed off and then expelled from the body.

This is also a treatment without downtime, simply have a Coolsculpting treatment and then go about the rest of your day as usual.

In this post, we will run through all the key details relating to Coolsculpting, including how it works, who it is suitable for, areas of the body it can target and also the alternatives.

We will also give a few details about Doctor Nyla’s clinics and why she stands apart from others offering Coolsculpting in the UK – winner of the UK Best Clinic Award, she has Diamond Premier Clinic status for Coolsculpting and is the only practitioner in the country to offer quad sculpting.

More on that later, but first details about Coolsculpting, including how it has its origins in an observation about ice lollies.

Coolsculpting in 50 Words

Coolsculpting is synonymous with fat freezing – also known as cryolipolysis.

Coolsculpting is the leading brand of this form of treatment, the version with full approval and also the one whose impact has been carefully studied to assess the results.

Coolsculptong targets areas of fat that the patient is finding hard to budge, this may be a double chin, or abdominal fat, of fat on the thighs or arms or buttocks.

We are all prone to developing these annoying pockets of fat that refuse to shift no matter how good our diet or how much we exercise.

Coolsculpting exists to solve this specific issue, it can target these unwanted areas of fat, killing the fat cells and leaving you more toned and also boosting self confidence and self esteem.

It is a procedure that produces results every bit as profound as an invasive option such as liposuction, yet without the need for major surgery.

How Does Coolsculpting Work?

At the start, we mentioned how Coolsculpting and fat freezing emerged from an observation about ice lollies.

A number of decades ago, some Harvard scientists noticed that some children get temporary dimples when they eat an ice lolly, why was this?

The theory was that the freezing nature of the lolly could damage localised fat cells, this theory developed into a full thesis by Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD.

They developed the idea that freezing can target specific cells and kill them without damage to any other cells, or the skin itself.

From this, fat freezing and Coolsculpting was born, the use of technology to freeze just the fat cells and kill and eliminate these, while leaving all other cells untouched.

Of course, the Coolsculptong treatment is a little more advanced than putting an ice pack on the area to be treated.

The Coolsculptong process uses a process called cryolipolysis to cool and freeze the pockets of fat.

These cells undergo a natural death (the scientific term is apoptosis) and the cells are naturally expelled over time.

The cells are then gone for good, never to return, the fat deposits removed.

Over a number of treatments, a significant proportion of fat can be removed, leading to a more contoured physique.

While all fat freezing options might work in broadly the same way, it is worth noting that Coolsculpting has a range of advantages, both in terms of performance and also safety.

Coolsculpting has its own Freeze Detect technology, this monitors the skin to ensure this is not being frozen instead of just the fat. If the skin does ever get too cold, the sensors kick in automatically and the process is paused.

Issues such as cold burns and ulcers – common with other forms of fat freezing – are therefore not a concern.

Coolsculptoing also produces proven, profound results as demonstrated by many scientific papers and research pieces.

Which Parts of the Body Can Coolsculpting Treat?

The cryolipolysis process can treat most parts of the body where there is a tendency to see localised fat deposits appear.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • The Stomach: Redefine your abdomen by removing stubborn areas of fat for a flatter and fitter appearance.
  • Flank: Why choose an invasive tummy tuck when your flanks can look just as good after CoolSculpting?
  • Bra Fat: For fat that accumulates around the armpit and bra area, we use a smaller applicator for a safe and incision-free procedure.
  • Inner Thigh: If your thighs have been rubbing together and are causing discomfort, then get your thigh gap back with CoolSculpting.
  • Outer Thigh: Do your outer thighs feel out of proportion with the rest of your body, dictating what clothes you feel comfortable wearing? Take back control with CoolSculpting.
  • Under Arm: Don’t let bingo wings bring you down. Arm yourself with confidence with CoolSculpting.
  • Upper Arm: Tone your upper arms for a bolder, stronger and lasting look.
  • Back Fat: Get rid of fat folds and loose skin for a leaner build.
  • Buttocks: If exercise hasn’t helped your bottom’s banana rolls, then reshape them with CoolSculpting.
  • Neck: Remove your jowls or that double chin with this age-defying treatment.

Can Coolsculpting Treat Multiple Areas?

At most clinics, Coolsculpting would be used to target one area of the body at a time, however Doctor Nyla’s clinics have the advantage of being able to offer Quadsculpting.

Some clinics provide coolsculpting, this an ability to apply the fat freezing technology to two body parts simultaneously, cutting down both on time and overall expense.

However, Doctor Nyla’s clinic takes this a stage further by being the only UK clinic to provide Quadsculpting, this an ability to use fat freezing on four body areas at once.

Allied to expertise that has seen the clinic achieve Diamond Clinic Status, this an ability to perform on multiple body areas at once means that in a single quick session it is possible to make truly profound improvements to numerous parts of the body.

Is Coolsculpting A Weight Loss Treatment

While Coolsculpting will lead to the eradication of some fat cells, it is not a weight loss treatment.

Coolsculpting, or any form of fat freezing would not be a treatment for someone who is overweight and wants to lose weight overall. Coolsculpting is not a treatment for obesity.

Instead, Coolsculpting is a treatment that leads to cosmetic change and, with this, can do so much to boost self esteem and confidence.

We all like to look our best and so concerns over a double chin, or other area of fat can play on our minds.

Coolsculpting enables anyone to quickly improve an area of their body that has been worrying them.

Suitability for Coolsculpting

Broadly speaking, most people who are in good overall health, but have stubborn pockets of fat they wish removed would be a candidate for Coolsculpting.

Suitability is always determined through a thorough consultation, this your chance to discuss your hopes for any procedure and the practitioner to listen and determine whether Coolsculpting can deliver the results you seek.

Your full medical history would also be taken into consideration.

As the procedure is non invasive, there are few side effects and it is considered to be a very safe treatment. However, certain people such as those who are pregnant would not be suitable.

What Results Can Be Achieved?

Visible results can be seen inside three weeks and they continue to improve as more of the fat cells die and are expelled.

The results achieved can be profound, leading to both improved appearance but also psychological benefits.

”In clinical studies, cryolipolysis was shown to reduce subcutaneous fat at the treatment site by up to 25% after one treatment. Improvements were seen in 86% of treated subjects. At 73%, the patient satisfaction rate is higher than with other technologies used for noninvasive lipolysis.” Kruger, N., Mai, S. V., Luebberding, S. & Sadick, N. S. (2014) Cryolipolysis for noninvasive body contouring: clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction.

However, words are perhaps not the best gauge for the results achieved, it is more indicative to see before and after images of those who have undergone Coolsculpting.

We have before and after images on site, while the official Coolsculpting site also has a huge range of images from former patients.

Coolsculpting Side Effects and After Care

One huge benefit of Coolsculpting is that it is completely non-invasive and non-surgical, and so comes with neither side effects other than extremely mild ones, nor need for aftercare or recovery.

The side effects that can occur, all rare and all mild, include some numbness, mild pain and localised bruising and swelling.

There are no after care requirements, no requirement to avoid activities or limit what you do.

Instead, you can simply go about your usual activities – indeed, you can have Coolsculpting treatments and then return to work that same afternoon.

Coolsculpting vs Alternatives

In terms of fat freezing, there is no comparison between Coolsculpting and other options – Coolsculpting is the approved version with proven results.

However, there are alternative, non-fat freezing ways to target localised fat deposits.

One that has been traditionally popular but is now far less common is liposuction. Liposuction is an invasive procedure, whereby fat is removed under general anaesthetic.

It can be as effective as fat freezing, but there are notable downsides. It is major surgery and so has a lengthy period of recovery, it is relatively expensive and it can, in some rare cases, lead to serious side effects including kidney and heart problems.

There are no apparent reasons why someone would choose liposuction when fat freezing is a viable alternative.

Other non-surgical options exist and these often work in a similar way by targeting the fat cells, killing them off so they are then naturally expelled over time.

These may be suitable so it is always wise to seek a consultation with a clinic that provides a range of fat-fighting treatments. Doctor Nyla is an expert in Aqualyx fat dissolving injections, and also LIPOcel ,which uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to target the fat cells.

At a detailed consultation, Doctor Nyla would discuss with you which option was the best choice to achieve the results you seek.
