How long do dermal cheek fillers last?
Clinical guidance from Dr Nyla Raja MBChB (Hons), MRCGP (Dist), DFFP, DPDermatology - GMC No. 6057913
This guide looks at the types of injectable treatments used for the cheeks, how long cheek fillers may last, when maintenance may be considered, and what to expect during recovery.
What Type of Fillers Are Used for the Cheeks?
Cheek treatment can be used to restore volume, improve contour, and create greater definition through the mid-face. The most appropriate injectable treatment depends on facial anatomy, tissue quality, the degree of volume loss, and the result being sought.
Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers are commonly used for cheek augmentation and facial volume restoration. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present within the body and plays a role in maintaining tissue hydration.
Different hyaluronic acid filler formulations have different characteristics, allowing the practitioner to select a product according to the required level of structural support, projection, and tissue integration.
At Dr Nyla Medispa, we use temporary hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers from established manufacturers, with product selection based on the individual patient and treatment area.
Collagen-Stimulating Injectables
Poly-L-lactic acid products, such as Sculptra, are a different category of injectable treatment. Rather than acting primarily as a hyaluronic acid volumising filler, they work by stimulating collagen production gradually over time.
Results therefore develop more progressively and treatment may involve a series of sessions depending on the patient’s anatomy and clinical objectives.

How Long Do Dermal Cheek Fillers Last?
Cheek filler results can usually be seen soon after treatment, although early swelling, tenderness, bruising, and temporary unevenness can affect the initial appearance.
Once this early tissue response has settled, cheek filler commonly remains noticeable for approximately 12 to 18 months, although individual results vary. Longevity depends on factors including the filler product used, the amount and depth of product placed, facial anatomy, previous treatment history, and individual biology.
The cheeks generally experience less movement than highly mobile areas such as the lips, which can contribute to a longer-lasting visible result in some patients.
The anatomical plane of treatment can also influence how the result behaves over time. Filler used for deeper structural support may have different longevity from product placed more superficially within the soft tissues.
These timeframes should always be treated as general guidance rather than a guarantee. Our detailed guide to how long dermal fillers last by treatment area explains how product selection, treatment depth, facial movement, metabolism, and individual biology can influence longevity.
As hyaluronic acid filler gradually breaks down, the visible effect usually reduces progressively rather than disappearing suddenly.

How Often Do Cheek Fillers Need to Be Redone?
There is no universal schedule for repeating cheek filler treatment.
Although cheek filler may remain noticeable for approximately 12 to 18 months in many patients, this does not mean treatment should automatically be repeated after a fixed period.
When considering maintenance, the practitioner should assess how much of the original result remains, whether previous filler may still be present, how the face has changed, and whether adding further product is appropriate for facial balance.
In some cases, the appropriate recommendation may be to wait rather than add more filler.
For more detail on maintenance and why filler should not be topped up according to a fixed timetable, read our guide to dermal filler longevity and maintenance.
A consultation with an appropriately qualified medical practitioner can help determine whether additional treatment is needed. You can book a free consultation at Dr Nyla Medispa to discuss your individual treatment plan.
How Long Does Cheek Filler Recovery Take?
Cheek filler treatment usually involves relatively limited downtime. Results are visible soon after treatment, although temporary swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, and mild firmness can occur during the first few days.
Most patients can return to normal everyday activities relatively quickly, but the treated area should be allowed time to settle.
General aftercare recommendations include:
| Aftercare | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Avoid alcohol | Avoid excessive alcohol on the day of treatment and alcohol for 24 hours afterwards, as it may make temporary bruising or swelling more noticeable. |
| Follow medication advice carefully | Do not stop or alter prescribed medication without appropriate medical advice. If you regularly take aspirin, anticoagulants, or anti-inflammatory medication, discuss this with your treating doctor. |
| Avoid make-up initially | We recommend avoiding make-up for the first 24 hours following treatment. |
| Avoid strenuous exercise | Avoid strenuous exercise and gym environments for at least 24 hours, and longer if significant swelling or tenderness remains. |
| Avoid excessive heat and significant sun exposure | Avoid significant heat, tanning beds, saunas, steam rooms, and substantial sun exposure during the early recovery period. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What Concerns Can Cheek Fillers Address?
Cheek fillers can be used to restore lost volume, improve mid-face support, enhance cheek projection, and create greater definition in appropriately selected patients.
Ageing, changes in facial fat, bone structure, skin quality, and individual anatomy can all influence the appearance of the cheeks.

What Is the Difference Between Cheek Fillers and Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are injectable treatments, but they work in different ways.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are used to restore or add volume, provide structural support, and alter facial contours. Anti-wrinkle injections use botulinum toxin to temporarily reduce the activity of selected muscles and are typically used to soften dynamic lines caused by repeated facial movement.
The most appropriate treatment depends on the concern being addressed, and in some patients the two approaches may be used for different aspects of facial ageing.
