What is the difference between Botox and fillers?

If you want to slow down the ageing process, Botox is one of the most popular treatments available to you. The prevalence of filler treatment is however on the increase, due to its subtler results, but which one should you choose? We take a closer look at the difference between the two treatments to help you decide.

Botox and Fillers: what’s the difference?

  • Botox is a name that comes from the drug Botulinum toxin, a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The treatment is injected into the muscles that control facial movement to prevent contractions and, in doing so, eliminate and prevent wrinkles and fine lines.

  • Fillers are colourless gels and include the likes of Restylane and Juvederm. They are injected into areas of facial tissue where there is moderate to severe folds or loss of volume, creating a plumper and smoother appearance.

Which should I choose?

If you want to target crease points, Botox is the ideal choice. If you want to restore deep lines that permanently appear, filler is normally the best option. Put simply, Botox is used for lines of expression and fillers are used for lines at rest, with the latter also working to emphasise contours and improve the look of the skin.
Ageing causes wrinkles to appear because we lose elastin, collagen and muscle tone. The first signs of ageing often appear in the nasial labia folds (from the nose to the corners of the mouth), the under-eye area, the glabeller lines (between the eyebrows) and the marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin).
Botox is best for areas of facial expression such as crow’s feet and glabellar lines. Fillers on the other hand are best for adding volume in the fat pads of the face, for example around the eyes and in the lips or cheeks. They can also add definition to the jawline, lips and chin.

How long do the results last?

Fillers usually last between six months to a year, while Botox can last between three to 16 months.

What else do I need to know?

It’s important that you do your research before getting treatment and discuss the results you want to achieve with a qualified skin specialist. They will be able to help you choose the best treatment that complements your overall appearance. A good doctor will evaluate your face and offer their professional advice on the best choice from Botox, fillers and other suitable treatments for your skin, facial symmetry and budget.
