NASA scientists originally devised LED light therapy to stimulate plant growth in space! Dermatologists soon discovered that light therapy was an excellent way to promote skin healing and began to use it as a safe and highly effective non-invasive treatment for various skin problems, including burns.

Light is composed of many different colours, each with a different wavelength. During LED therapy the skin is exposed to light of selected wavelengths and colours, most commonly blue and red.

Blue light impacts the oil-producing sebaceous glands in the skin, causing them to produce less oil. It also kills a specific bacteria found in acne-prone skin which causes the inflammation associated with the condition.

Red light is also anti-inflammatory and has been found to improve scarring and the damage caused by ageing that can show as wrinkles or hyperpigmentation. Research suggests that red light also stimulates collagen production.

Some clients see benefits immediately, but skin issues like acne will benefit most from an extended course of treatment. For example, a typical course to treat acne would require 12 sessions over six weeks. You may find that LED light therapy gives you a healthy glow as it stimulates blood flow to the skin. However, this is not a suntan treatment as the light used does not affect the melanin in the skin.

Before your treatment begins, it will be necessary for Dr Nyla to examine your skin and discuss the treatment with you. Dermalux LED light therapy is an extremely safe and relaxing treatment. However, Dr Nyla needs to know about any medications you take, as some drugs can cause photosensitivity. If this is an issue for you, Dr Nyla will suggest an alternative and equally effective treatment for you from the wide range that she offers.
