Dermal Lip Fillers | How long do they last?

As we get older, our bodies naturally stop producing collagen as frequently. In these cases, many people turn to dermal fillers. This non-invasive treatment includes a soft gel-like substance that is injected under the skin to add volume in certain areas and smooth any wrinkles. Popular areas include the cheeks, eyes and lips; with the latter appealing specifically to Gen Z and younger millennials.

This guide will take a closer look at dermal lip fillers and how long they last. We will look at the longevity of the treatment and what you should consider.

What happens during dermal filler treatment?

Before any treatment, there is a consultation between the practitioner and the client. This is to assess the suitability of the client and what will happen during the procedure. The length of the consultation will be a maximum of an hour long.

During the treatment, the lips will be numbed with a topical anaesthetic and injected with ultra-fine needles. As this treatment is non-invasive, it typically lasts between thirty to forty-five minutes.

If you are looking at getting dermal lip filler treatment, it is important to find a reputable clinic that has medical qualifications. One of the dangers of finding cheap dermal fillers is that they are typically performed by non-medically qualified practitioners who do not consider the client’s wellbeing; leading to sub-optimal or botched results.

Doctor Nyla is one of the UK’s top cosmetic doctors and has the medical accreditations to prove it. We provide in-depth consultations to ensure you are completely happy before the treatment, so any questions can be answered by our medical practitioners.

How long do dermal lip fillers last?

Dermal lip fillers can last up to twelve months, depending on the brand used. They are made up of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced in the body. The longevity of the lip injections depends on the type of hyaluronic acid fillers used:

  • Restylane – six months.
  • Juvederm – six months.
  • Belotero – six to eighteen months.
  • Teosyal – nine months to a year.

One of the benefits of lip fillers is that they are temporary and will only last for a short amount of time, as mentioned above. But you do not have to keep your hyaluronic acid fillers in if you are unhappy with the look. Dissolving lip filler is a treatment that quickly breaks down dermal filler safely and comfortably.

How long does the swelling last after lip injection treatment?

Much like any treatment, there are temporary side effects that can occur. Lip dermal fillers involve a series of injections around the lips to plump up the area and reduce any wrinkles, such as smokers’ or marionette lines. This may result in swelling and soreness around the treatment areas. However, this is nothing to worry about; understand that swelling is a natural response and may last a couple of days after treatment.

Time What to expect
Day of lip filler treatment Mild to moderate swelling.
One day after Inflammation is the most severe.
Two days after Still slightly swollen but has started to decrease.
Three days and beyond Will start to go down until it has completely healed.

Swelling may depend specifically on the patient, as their age and lifestyle may be factors. After dermal fillers, lips can be swollen from twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

How often should you top dermal lip fillers up?

Depending on the product used and the age of the client, it is recommended to top up the lip filler every six to twelve months. However, before booking your next treatment, it is important to consult with your doctor to determine whether this is the best specifically for you.

At Doctor Nyla, we work closely with our clients to educate them on our procedures. We want to ensure you are receiving the best cosmetic treatment that will help deal with any problem areas that you are unhappy with.

Frequently asked questions

How painful is lip filler?

As to be expected, treatment can cause some discomfort. However, at Dr Nyla, we have the expertise and necessary care to ensure treatment is as painless as possible. Lip fillers often contain a mild anaesthetic, and a topical anaesthetic can be used beforehand for further pain relief.

Discover more about lip dermal fillers here.

When can you eat or drink after having your lips filled?

There is no limitation, however, it is recommended that you wait until the topical anaesthetic has worn off before eating. For the first twenty-four hours, it is recommended to avoid chewy or hard-to-eat foods that may disturb the fillers and injection areas.

Alcohol can be used as a blood thinner, so for the integrity of the lip fillers, it is recommended to avoid drinking alcohol for a few days after the treatment. Drinking alcohol may increase the chances of inflammation and more severe side effects.
