Is Profhilo Safe?

Profhilo is generally well tolerated in appropriately selected patients when administered by a suitably trained medical practitioner. It contains stabilised complexes of high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and is injected at selected anatomical points within the skin.

Published Profhilo safety data from post-marketing surveillance describe injection-site effects such as swelling, redness, and discomfort among the reported adverse events. These are consistent with the types of temporary reactions expected after an injectable procedure.

However, “non-surgical” does not mean completely risk-free. What Are the Most Common Side Effects of Profhilo?

The most common reactions occur around the individual injection points and are usually temporary.

• Small raised bumps or papules
• Localised swelling
• Redness
• Tenderness or mild soreness
• Bruising
• Minor itching or sensitivity around an injection point

These effects should generally become less noticeable as the treatment settles.

The amount of visible swelling or bruising varies between patients. Some people have little evidence of treatment after several hours, while others may have visible injection marks or bruising for several days.

Why Does Profhilo Leave Bumps After Treatment?

One of the most recognisable short-term effects of Profhilo is the appearance of small raised bumps at the injection sites.

These occur because Profhilo is initially placed as small deposits beneath the skin. Immediately after treatment, the product and localised swelling can make each injection point appear raised.

On the face, these may resemble small mosquito bites or rounded areas of swelling. They are generally an expected part of the immediate recovery period rather than evidence that something has gone wrong.

For most patients, the bumps gradually flatten as the product disperses and the initial swelling settles. They are often substantially reduced within several hours and are usually much less obvious by the following day.

Do not repeatedly press, massage, or manipulate the bumps unless your practitioner has specifically instructed you to do so.

A lump that persists, becomes increasingly painful, develops marked redness, or appears significantly different from the other injection sites should be assessed rather than assumed to be a normal Profhilo bump.

Profhilo Swelling, Bruising, and Tenderness

Swelling

Mild swelling is expected following injections. It may occur directly around individual injection points or affect a slightly wider area.

Swelling should usually reduce progressively. Increasing swelling, particularly when associated with heat, marked redness, worsening pain, or systemic illness, requires clinical advice.

Bruising

Small blood vessels can be disrupted whenever a needle passes through the skin. This means bruising can occur even when treatment has been performed correctly.

A bruise may become more visible during the day after treatment before gradually changing colour and fading. Patients who bruise easily or take certain medications may experience more visible bruising.

Do not stop prescribed medicines, including anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication, simply to reduce bruising around an aesthetic treatment unless the prescribing clinician has specifically advised this.

Tenderness

Individual injection points can feel tender or mildly sore during the first day or two. This should generally improve rather than worsen.

Can Profhilo Cause an Infection?

Infection is uncommon, but any procedure that breaks the skin creates a potential route for microorganisms to enter.

This is why Profhilo should be performed using appropriate skin preparation, sterile equipment, and clinical infection-control standards.

Possible warning signs of infection include:

• Redness that is spreading rather than settling
• Increasing warmth around an injection site
• Progressively worsening pain
• Increasing swelling after the initial recovery period
• Discharge or pus
• Feeling generally unwell or developing a fever

Can Profhilo Cause Vascular Occlusion?

Vascular complications are rare but potentially serious risks associated with facial injections of hyaluronic acid products.

A vascular complication can occur if injectable material enters or significantly compromises blood flow within a vessel. Although Profhilo differs from conventional volumising dermal fillers in its physical properties and treatment technique, vascular anatomy still needs to be respected whenever injectable treatment is performed.

Warning signs requiring urgent clinical assessment can include:

• Severe or unexpectedly increasing pain
• Skin that becomes unusually pale or white
• Mottled, dusky, grey, or purple discolouration
• A change in skin temperature
• Rapidly evolving changes around or beyond an injection site

Visual disturbance, sudden loss of vision, neurological symptoms, breathing difficulty, or other severe acute symptoms following an injection require emergency medical attention.

Profhilo Aftercare: What Should You Do After Treatment?

Profhilo recovery is usually straightforward, but sensible aftercare helps minimise unnecessary irritation and reduces avoidable pressure or contamination around the injection sites.

During the First Six Hours

• Avoid unnecessary touching or rubbing of the treated area
• Do not massage the injection points unless instructed
• Avoid applying make-up directly over fresh injection sites
• Avoid non-essential skincare products until the initial injection sites have settled
• Keep the treated skin clean

During the First 24 Hours

• Avoid strenuous exercise
• Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and excessive heat exposure
• Avoid vigorous facial massage
• Do not pick or press the temporary Profhilo bumps
• Follow any additional instructions provided by your treating practitioner

A cool compress may sometimes help with minor swelling or tenderness, but avoid firm pressure directly over the injection sites.

What Should You Avoid After Profhilo?

The main principle is to avoid unnecessary irritation, contamination, heat, and mechanical pressure while the injection sites begin to heal.

In the early period after treatment, it is sensible to avoid:

• Heavy exercise
• Saunas and steam rooms
• Very hot baths or prolonged heat exposure
• Facial massage
• Manipulating injection-site bumps
• Applying make-up immediately over fresh injection sites
• Other elective facial procedures until the area has settled and your practitioner considers them appropriate

There is usually no need for prolonged downtime. However, if bruising develops, visible recovery can take longer even when the treatment itself is settling normally.

When Should You Contact the Clinic After Profhilo?

Contact your treating clinic if you are worried about a reaction, particularly when symptoms are worsening rather than settling.

You should seek clinical advice promptly for:

• Increasing rather than decreasing pain
• Persistent or rapidly increasing swelling
• Spreading redness or warmth
• Pus or discharge
• Fever or feeling systemically unwell
• A persistent or painful lump that does not resemble the other injection sites
• Marked asymmetry developing alongside significant swelling
• Unusual blanching, mottling, greyness, or dusky skin discolouration
• Any symptom that concerns you or was not discussed as part of expected recovery

Do not wait for a routine review if there is significant pain, unusual skin discolouration, or another rapidly evolving symptom.

Who May Not Be Suitable for Profhilo?

Profhilo is not appropriate for every patient. Suitability should be established before treatment rather than assumed because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally within the body.

Factors that may affect suitability include:

• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Active infection or inflammation in the proposed treatment area
• Relevant allergies or previous reactions to injectable treatments
• Certain medical conditions
• Medication that may affect treatment or recovery
• Previous injectable treatment in the same area
• A skin concern that Profhilo is unlikely to address effectively
