Just as the rest of the face changes during ageing, so can the lips. The skin on the mouth is thinner and more delicate than other areas of the face, making the lips more vulnerable to the development of wrinkles. Small creases around the outside of the mouth, known as lip lines or smokers’ lines, are another common effect of ageing as collagen and elastin is lost. Tissue density also decreases as we get older, leading to thin lips, as youthful volume declines.

Some people naturally possess thinner lips, as well as lips that are asymmetric or do not own a well defined cupid’s bow (the v shape at the centre of the top lip). In this instance a person can feel this part of their face is not as well balanced as it could be, in comparison to the rest of the face.
