Dr Nyla Champions Safe Practice in the £3 billion Non-Surgical Sector

“I am on a mission to get the non- surgical cosmetic treatment industry better regulated to protect men and women against ‘backstreet botch jobs Dr Nyla Raja

Under the Skin

Documentary ‘Under the skin: The Botched beauty business airing on BBC on 24th June exposes botched non-surgical beauty treatments such as Botox, micro-needling, and thread lifts which have all surged in popularity over the last few years.

The non-surgical aesthetics industry is now worth around £3 billion. Yet, for such an accessible industry, it is almost completely unregulated – and that is putting patients at risk.

Leading cosmeceutical doctor, Nyla Raja, is commenting and speaking with beauty influencer Anchal Seda who is investigating how unregulated training is leading to clients suffering with severe and long-term injuries. Together they explore the damage this is doing.

“I am on a mission to get the non- surgical cosmetic treatment industry better regulated to protect men and women against ‘backstreet botch jobs Dr Nyla Raja

She meets a victim of botched treatment who almost lost her eyesight.  Anchal discovers anyone can train to become an aesthetics practitioner and go on to carry out any number of invasive beauty treatments.

But finding good training is expensive and challenging, as nobody is regulating the quality of these courses.

Anchal realises while you may be able to book an appointment at your local clinic for an affordable price, there is no guarantee your practitioner has trained to an adequate level.

With no previous experience in aesthetics, Anchal goes undercover on some training courses to show us how easy it is to get qualified.

She reveals how complicated procedures involving needles are being taught over the internet with no practical elements, while face-to-face courses are failing to teach basic hygiene and anatomy, which ultimately compromises patient safety.

“I cannot stress the importance of receiving aesthetic treatment from a registered doctor, nurse or dentist. The lack of regulation in the UK leads to vulnerable patients being exposed to having medical treatments delivered by no medical lay people. I feel it is my duty to champion best practice across our sector and keep our public safe, achieving the best results for their recommended procedures with a medical professional. Says Dr Nyla

After a shocking reveal of the poor quality of these training courses in which patient safety is put at risk, Anchal asks, what will it take to make this industry safer?

Dr Nyla explains how the industry is booming but how important it is to be cautious and see qualified Doctors who are reputable“do your research and find a reputable Medispa or an Aesthetic Clinic led by a doctor to fulfil your cosmetic desires’ she advises.
