Cellulite is completely normal, in fact it is commonplace – it is thought that between 80 and 90% of women have cellulite and some estimates go as high as 98%
It is also true that cellulite tends to be visible in just a handful of places and the thighs and bum are chief among these areas.
Having cellulite on your thighs and bum is nothing to be ashamed of, mother nature makes women that way, however that isn’t to say we have to live with it.
For those who want to tackle cellulite there are methods. You can reduce its future formation and also tackle existing build-ups. Typically, a different approach is required for both aims.
In this post, we’ll have a look at how you can get ditch the cellulite on your buttocks and legs.
What is Cellulite and Where Does It Come From
You may not care too much, or already know what cellulite is – in which case please just skip this section. You may simply want to know how to get rid of it…
Cellulite is simply small, lumpy fat deposits under the skin, it is a condition that tends to occur where there is reduced circulation, hence the likelihood of it occurring on our bums and thighs.
Many factors meld together to create cellulite – loose skin, fat accumulation, water retention and more – all common factors which is why this is so common a complaint.
The five factors are:
- Alterations in the skin
- Damaged collagen and elastin fibres
- Poor blood supply
- Enlarged fat cell chambers
- Accumulation of metabolic waste
Genetics also play a part, some are simply more susceptible to cellulite than others.
Diet and lifestyle also have a role to play.
What Factors Make Cellulite More Likely?
Knowledge of the factors that can lead to cellulite can help us prevent the problem becoming more noticeable.
As mentioned, genetics plays a part, but other factors are within our own control.
Dietary changes can help – there are foods to avoid and others that can be beneficial – we explore this in greater detail lower down.
Exercise or the lack of is another determining factor and so too is whether you smoke.
However, it should not be thought that cellulite is only common if you have a poor diet, smoke and don’t exercise. The prevalence of the condition shows that this simply is not true, although the factors mentioned will influence just how much cellulite someone has.
Avoiding Cellulite vs Shifting Cellulite
A key point to raise is that a different strategy will often be needed based on whether you have no cellulite and want to stay that way, or have cellulite that you are desperate to see the back of.
If you want to avoid any future issues, then diet will be key, so too exercise. Both of these are of value to someone with cellulite already, after all they improve overall health, but they are unlikely to make a significant difference to existing cellulite. They certainly won’t have a quick impact.
Someone with existing cellulite that they want removed may require intervention (this can be non-invasive intervention), but there would obviously be no value to someone without cellulite having this procedure.

How Should I Tweak My Diet?
There is no magic diet for helping remove or prevent cellulite, essentially you want a healthy diet, the type that would be advised for general, overall health.
Fats should be avoided or reduced – some fat is necessary in the diet, but where possible this should be natural fats, rather than chocolate and cake.
Stay well hydrated, again, water is better than sugary drinks, alcohol won’t help either.
Green vegetables are superb, salads and berries too.
Most of us want a balanced diet and it is hard to completely avoid the treats. Be aware though that it is the puddings, the sugary treats and the sweet drinks that are doing most damage.
Tweaking the diet is most important for preventing further build-up. It may be that if you have a non-invasive procedure that does a superb job of removing cellulite, you then have renewed motivation to follow a healthier diet so as to avoid a recurrence.
The Role Of Exercise
Exercise cannot specifically target cellulite on the bum and thighs, or indeed cellulite anywhere.
As with diet, there is a huge benefit to exercising and regular exercise will help to prevent further build up, but it is not a targeted way to remove cellulite from a problem area.
In this way, it is similar to stubborn tummy fat – much as we might do sit-ups, they won’t target the fat in any specific area.
The best exercise for cellulite in general is simply to carry out running, cycling, swimming and any form of exercise that requires lengthy, continual motion. Going for a lengthy run at medium pace likely to be better than a short, sharp intense burst of exercise.
Interval training can also be effective.
A final thing to note is that simply getting up from the chair regularly can be beneficial – this helping to reduce any poor circulation issues, these tending to be common in the buttocks and thighs, hence why cellulite is so common there.
Can Creams Be Effective?
Creams can be appealing because they are cheaper than a course of treatment, or at least appear to be (if you don’t factor in just how long you’ll need to use the cream for…)
The issue is that they have active ingredients in very low levels and so any impact is going to be minimal and also take a long time to show a real difference. It is likely either that people will give up, feeling they have wasted money, or come to wish they had gone for a treatment that, while more expensive initially, brought immediate and noticeable results.
The danger with creams is that they are essentially wasted money. Unlike diet or exercise, they provide no wider benefit so if they don’t tackle the cellulite they serve no purpose at all.
Non Invasive Treatment To Address Cellulite
Non-invasive procedures can tackle all five causes of cellulite.
The leading procedure is called BTL Unison and it combines radiofrequency and cellutone technology to treat both the cause and symptoms of cellulite.
Radiofrequency works by reshaping the collagen found deep in the skin, destroying fat cells and stimulating the production of stronger collagen.
Meanwhile cellutone technology increases the blood flow and supply and rids the body of metabolic waste while also restoring connective tissue – this tightens and tones the skin.
In a survey by Fritz et al, it was found that these procedures reduced cellulite in 93% of women, a staggering success rate. Their conclusion was that this is an effective and safe treatment.
You can find out more about BTL Unison Cellulite Treatment on this site, including a before and after image gallery – this a superb way to see the impact that has been seen on patients.
Procedures such as this have the benefit of being targeted and so immediately tackling the problem – being non invasive there is also no recovery time. Results can be seen after a single session, although a course of four sessions is typical for the best results to be seen. However, it may be that for light cellulite fewer treatments are necessary.
For anyone with cellulite on their bum and thighs that they would like to shift – and this is many, many women across the UK, the great news is that this is entirely possible. Better still, by then following a sensible diet and exercise routine, it is possible to also make re-emergence less likely.
