After ThermaVein facial vein treatment, it is normal for the treated area to look temporarily red, feel warm or sensitive, and, in some cases, develop tiny dry micro-crusts. These changes usually settle as the skin heals. Gentle cleansing, avoiding heat and friction, and protecting the area from UV exposure are the key elements of aftercare.

ThermaVein uses controlled thermal energy to treat selected superficial thread veins. The treated vessel is then gradually broken down by the body, so the skin’s appearance may continue to improve after your appointment rather than changing all at once.

What does skin look like after ThermaVein?

Immediately after treatment, the skin may be pink or red at the treatment points and can feel warm. Some larger vessels can look more noticeable for a short time before they fade. Dryness and small micro-crusts may also develop over the following days.

These are usually temporary healing responses. Avoid picking, rubbing, squeezing, or exfoliating the area, as this can prolong irritation and may increase the chance of unwanted pigment change or scarring.

There is often little downtime after facial ThermaVein. However, visible redness can last longer for some people, particularly where several vessels have been treated, the skin is reactive, or there is an underlying tendency to flushing or facial redness and visible veins.

Clinical Note from Dr Nyla Raja

Dr Nyla Medispa offers ThermaVein for appropriate facial thread-vein concerns. Suitability, treatment planning, and aftercare should be tailored to the pattern of visible vessels, skin type, medical history, and any wider cause of facial redness.

ThermaVein aftercare for the first 48 hours

For the first two days, treat the area gently. The aim is to allow the skin to settle without adding unnecessary heat, friction, or irritation.

  • Wash with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser; pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it.
  • Do not touch the treated area unnecessarily.
  • Avoid scrubs, facial brushes, exfoliating acids, retinoids, or any skincare product that stings or feels irritating until the skin is calm and intact.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise that causes significant sweating or facial flushing.
  • If you are prone to facial flushing, it may be sensible to avoid recognised triggers such as alcohol and spicy food during this initial period.
  • Avoid hot showers directly on the face, steam rooms, saunas, and sunbeds.

General ThermaVein aftercare guidance also advises gentle washing, avoiding excessive exercise in the first 48 hours, and avoiding harsh cleansing, steaming, and exfoliation while the skin recovers.

Can I wear makeup after ThermaVein?

Breathable makeup does not affect the treated vein itself. However, the practical consideration is the skin surface: if it feels tender, looks irritated, or has micro-crusts, applying and removing makeup can create friction.

If you choose to wear makeup, use clean hands or freshly washed brushes, apply it lightly without rubbing, and remove it with a gentle cleanser or micellar product. Do not try to cover crusting with heavy layers of makeup, and do not scrub when cleansing at the end of the day. Your individual post-treatment instructions should take priority, particularly if a larger area has been treated.

Sun exposure and SPF after facial thread vein treatment

Daily sun protection is particularly important while treated skin is healing. UV exposure can worsen redness and increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation in susceptible skin.

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and good UVA protection once it can be applied gently without disrupting the skin. The NHS recommends SPF 30 or higher alongside shade and protective clothing. In practical terms, use a hat and seek shade when outdoors, especially if there are any dry or crusted treatment points that you do not want to rub with product.

Avoid intentional tanning and sunbeds while the skin is settling. Ongoing sun protection also matters after recovery, as sun exposure is one factor that can contribute to the development of new visible facial vessels over time.

When will ThermaVein results be visible?

Some fine vessels may look reduced immediately, but it is common for the final improvement to develop gradually as the treated vessel is reabsorbed. A temporary bruise-like or more visible appearance can occur before the area clears.

Results vary according to the size, depth, number, and location of the vessels, as well as individual skin response. More than one session may be appropriate for some concerns. ThermaVein guidance advises allowing at least 28 days before a further treatment session, giving the skin time to recover and the initial response time to develop.

When should I contact your practitioner?

Mild warmth, redness, dryness, and small crusts can be expected after ThermaVein. Please contact the clinic for assessment if you develop blistering, increasing rather than improving pain, spreading redness, marked swelling, persistent bleeding, discharge, or feel unwell with a temperature.

These symptoms are not typical signs of straightforward recovery and should not be managed by adding strong skincare products or attempting to remove crusting. Increasing warmth, pain, swelling, redness, or pus-like discharge can be signs that a skin wound needs clinical review, as outlined in NHS wound-care advice.

The key point

ThermaVein aftercare is usually simple: be gentle with the skin, avoid heat and friction for the first 48 hours, protect the area from UV exposure, and allow temporary redness or micro-crusting to resolve naturally. If your recovery does not feel in keeping with the advice you were given, contact your practitioner rather than guessing.
