For many patients, one Sofwave treatment is an appropriate starting plan, rather than a course of sessions. It is designed to stimulate gradual collagen remodelling, so the outcome should usually be assessed over approximately 12 weeks before deciding whether a further treatment would add meaningful benefit.

Whether one session is enough depends less on a fixed number and more on the cause and degree of the concern being treated. At Dr Nyla Medispa, treatment planning considers skin laxity, skin quality, the area involved, facial volume changes, anatomy, and the level of improvement you hope to achieve.

When one Sofwave treatment may be enough

A single session may be suitable for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who would like gradual, natural-looking improvement in firmness, fine lines, or definition around areas such as the brow, jawline, under-chin area, or neck.

Sofwave delivers controlled ultrasound energy to the mid-dermis, where it initiates a healing response associated with collagen and elastin remodelling. It does not work like a treatment that physically replaces lost facial volume, so it is not intended to create an immediate volumising effect.

The clinical evidence does not support one universal treatment schedule for every patient. A small prospective study of a Sofwave-type parallel-beam ultrasound device used two sessions for facial laxity, while another study reported improvement after a single treatment for lower-face concerns. These studies support the potential for gradual improvement, but they do not mean that every patient needs two treatments, or that one session will be sufficient for every concern. Published clinical research should be interpreted alongside individual assessment, treatment area, and realistic expectations.

When might a second session be considered?

A second treatment is sometimes considered after the collagen response has had time to develop. It is not automatically required, and should not be assumed at the point of booking.

What is being assessed? Why it can affect the plan
Degree of skin laxity More established laxity may require a different or additional approach.
Skin quality Fine, crepey, sun-damaged, or less resilient skin may respond differently.
Treatment area The brow, lower face, neck, and body have different tissue characteristics.
Facial volume and fat distribution Loose skin is not the only reason for reduced definition or a softer contour.
Desired change Sofwave is intended for progressive, measured tightening, not a surgical-level lift.
Individual response Collagen remodelling varies between patients.

For example, a less defined jawline may reflect skin laxity, but it can also be influenced by facial volume loss, fat distribution, soft-tissue position, or underlying structure. Sofwave can improve selected skin-laxity concerns, but it cannot replace structural volume where that is the principal issue. In suitable cases, dermal fillers or another treatment may be more relevant, either instead of or alongside skin tightening.

Clinical Note from Dr Nyla Raja

Clinical assessment at Dr Nyla Medispa considers whether skin laxity is the main cause of the visible change before deciding on the treatment area or whether another Sofwave session is likely to add meaningful benefit. Facial volume, fat distribution, skin quality, anatomy, previous aesthetic procedures, and the outcome sought all form part of an individual treatment plan.

When will Sofwave results develop?

Sofwave results are progressive. Some patients notice an early sense of firmness, but this should not be treated as the completed outcome. Temporary tissue response, mild swelling, and hydration changes can affect the way the skin looks shortly after an energy-based treatment.

The more meaningful change develops as collagen remodelling continues in the following weeks. At Dr Nyla Medispa, improvement is expected to continue developing over approximately three months. This is why it is sensible to avoid judging whether one session has been enough too soon after treatment.

A practical Sofwave timeline

  • Immediately after treatment: mild redness, warmth, tenderness, or swelling may occur. Many patients can return to normal activities straight away, depending on their individual response.
  • First few weeks: the skin settles, and an early improvement in firmness or texture may become noticeable.
  • By around 12 weeks: collagen remodelling has had more time to develop, making this a more useful point to review the result and discuss next steps if needed.

Individual results and recovery vary. Temporary treatment effects are usually mild and settle within hours to a few days, but suitability, treatment settings, and aftercare should always be discussed with an appropriately trained medical practitioner.

How often is Sofwave maintained?

Sofwave does not stop the natural ageing process, so periodic maintenance may be considered as skin changes continue over time. The interval is not fixed and should be agreed following reassessment of the initial response, age, skin quality, lifestyle, and long-term aesthetic goals.

Maintenance should not mean repeating treatment by routine without reassessment. If the concern has changed, or if volume loss or deeper tissue descent has become more significant, the most appropriate treatment plan may also change.

Questions worth asking before committing to more than one session

  • Is skin laxity the main cause of the concern I can see?
  • Which precise anatomical areas are included in the treatment plan?
  • When should my result be reviewed?
  • What level of improvement is realistic from one treatment?
  • If a second session is suggested, what clinical benefit is it expected to provide?
  • Could another treatment better address volume loss, texture concerns, or more pronounced lifting needs?

The NHS advises checking a practitioner’s qualifications, relevant training, experience, insurance, and aftercare arrangements before having a cosmetic procedure. It is also important to understand the expected result, potential risks, and the full treatment plan before proceeding.

The key point

One session of Sofwave is often enough to begin treatment for mild to moderate skin laxity, with results developing gradually over approximately 12 weeks. A second session may be appropriate for some patients, but it should follow an individual assessment rather than a standard package. The right plan is the one that addresses what is actually causing the visible concern and sets realistic expectations for a subtle, natural-looking result.
