BBL HERO Downtime and Aftercare: Redness, Darkening Pigmentation, Makeup, and Recovery
Clinical guidance from Dr Nyla Raja MBChB (Hons), MRCGP (Dist), DFFP, DPDermatology - GMC No. 6057913
Dr Nyla Medispa provides BBL HEROic, a non-surgical treatment with minimal social downtime for many suitable patients. It is common for treated skin to look pink or feel warm for a few hours, while targeted brown marks can look temporarily darker before fading over the following days. Most people can return to everyday activities straight away, but careful skincare and sun protection are important while the skin settles.
Your individual recovery depends on the treatment area, settings used, skin type, the pattern of pigmentation being treated, and your skin’s response. The personalised aftercare given by your practitioner should always take priority over general guidance.
How long is BBL HERO downtime?
BBL HEROic is a non-surgical broadband light treatment used to improve the appearance of sun damage, redness, uneven tone, and selected pigmentation concerns. Many patients have only mild, short-lived redness, which usually settles within a few hours.
When brown spots, freckles, or areas of sun damage are targeted, the visible recovery can take longer than the initial redness. Marks may darken or become more sharply defined before they gradually fade or flake away. This can be an expected response to treatment, but any unexpected, widespread, or worsening pigment change should be reviewed by your practitioner.
| Recovery stage | What you may notice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately after | Warmth, pinkness, or mild swelling | Keep the skin cool, avoid rubbing, and follow your aftercare plan |
| First 24 hours | Redness may resemble mild sun exposure | Use gentle skincare, and avoid heat and strenuous activity if skin remains warm or flushed |
| Days 2–7 | Treated pigment may look darker or more distinct | Do not pick, scrub, exfoliate, or try to remove darkened marks |
| About 1–2 weeks | Darkened pigment may fade or shed naturally | Continue gentle care and consistent UV protection |

Why does pigmentation look darker after BBL HEROic?
BBL HEROic directs broadband light towards chromophores in the skin, including melanin within brown marks. Following treatment, this targeted pigment can temporarily darken as the skin begins its natural renewal process. Over the next one to two weeks, it may become less noticeable or shed naturally.
This change is most often seen in discrete sun spots and areas of photodamage. It is different from new, diffuse, or rapidly worsening pigmentation. Pigmentation is not a single diagnosis: age spots, post-inflammatory marks, diffuse sun damage, and melasma behave differently and may require different treatment plans. Our pigmentation treatment guide explains why assessment of the cause and pattern matters.
Clinical Note from Dr Nyla Raja
At Dr Nyla Medispa, BBL HEROic treatment is tailored to the treatment area and the individual’s skin and pigmentation concerns. Assessment of skin type, the likely cause and distribution of pigmentation, recent UV exposure, and the area being treated is particularly important where pigmentation is diffuse, recurrent, or associated with melasma, as recovery and the most appropriate treatment plan can vary.
BBL HERO aftercare: the first week
Cleanse gently and keep skincare simple
Use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser with clean hands, then pat the skin dry with a soft towel. Avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, cleansing brushes, and physical exfoliation while the skin is settling. If your skin feels dry or tight, use a moisturiser approved as part of your individual aftercare plan.
Do not introduce new skincare products during recovery. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, and other active products can be irritating on recently treated skin, so restart them only when your practitioner has confirmed that it is appropriate. Sciton’s BBL post-care guidance also advises gentle cleansing without rubbing or exfoliation, alongside regular moisturising.
Protect the skin from UV exposure
Sun protection is a central part of aftercare, particularly when BBL HEROic has been used for sun damage or pigmentation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day, reapply it during outdoor exposure, and add practical protection such as shade, a wide-brimmed hat, or protective clothing.
The NHS advises choosing at least SPF 30 with high UVA protection, and not relying on sunscreen alone. Avoid deliberate tanning and sunbeds. UV exposure during recovery may increase the risk of sunburn and unwanted pigment changes.
Can you exercise, use a sauna, or swim after BBL HEROic?
Most normal daily activity is possible after treatment. However, it is sensible to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy sweating, saunas, steam rooms, and very hot water while the skin feels hot, flushed, or sensitive. Heat and friction can make temporary redness more noticeable.
Wait until the skin has settled before swimming, particularly in chlorinated pools or spas. If you have had a more intensive treatment, treatment on the body, or have any visible irritation, your practitioner may advise a longer interval.
When can you wear makeup after BBL HEROic?
Most patients can return to regular makeup and skincare the following day, provided the skin is intact and there has been no individual advice to wait longer. Apply makeup with clean hands or clean brushes, and remove it gently at the end of the day.
If the area remains very warm, swollen, tender, blistered, or broken, do not apply makeup over it. Contact your treating practitioner for advice rather than trying to cover or treat the reaction yourself.
When should you contact your practitioner?
Mild warmth, temporary redness, slight swelling, and temporary darkening of treated pigment can be part of normal recovery. Contact your treating practitioner promptly if you develop blistering, broken skin, marked or increasing swelling, escalating pain, weeping, or a reaction that is worsening rather than settling.
It is also sensible to get in touch if you are unsure whether a pigment change is expected, especially if it is new, widespread, or appears increasingly uneven. Early advice allows the area to be assessed and helps avoid unnecessary irritation from unsuitable skincare products.
The key point on BBL HERO recovery
BBL HEROic downtime is usually brief: redness commonly settles within hours, while treated brown marks may darken before fading over roughly one to two weeks. Gentle skincare, avoiding friction and excess heat, and consistent broad-spectrum sun protection support recovery. If your skin response feels outside the guidance given to you, contact your treating practitioner for individual advice.
