UltraPulse® CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
UltraPulse laser skin resurfacing is a skin rejuvenation procedure, unlike any other laser treatment. UltraPulse laser skin resurfacing treatment can offer an effective solution to a number of concerns, related to ageing, including: fine lines and wrinkles, facial creases and folds. By also replenishing the deeper layers, repairing and renewing damaged cells can help to reduce the appearance of pigmentation, age spots, sun damage and minor scarring.
How Does UltraPulse Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
Doctor Nyla performs her UltraPulse laser skin resurfacing at the Medispa clinics in Alderley Edge in Cheshire, Liverpool and Mayfair in London.
DeepFXTM and ActiveFXTM are part of the UltraPulse® fractional resurfacing solutions of the system, offering you dramatic results on a range of skin ageing concerns, from deep wrinkles to fine lines and uneven skin tone and texture. The Lumenis® fractional laser creates microscopic channels that trigger the process of new collagen and elastic fibre production, while leaving some unaffected skin in between the channels to reduce healing time.
The result is deep dermal regeneration that dramatically improves your skin elasticity and appearance. This super technology cannot be replicated by any other device due to its Ultrapulse beams which penetrate deep but quickly causing far less thermal damage to surrounding tissue, but reaching its target much faster.
What is UltraPulse Laser Skin Resurfacing?
UltraPulse can use either the DeepFXTM or ActiveFXTM system, depending on your concerns. A local anaesthetic is administered before applying the laser to the treatment area. Microscopic channels are created on the surface of the skin which triggers the growth of new collagen and elastin from the natural processes of healing and repair. This results in dermal regeneration; rebuilding the internal structure and restoring the complexion’s elasticity.
This isn’t like any other CO2 laser treatment. Traditional CO2 lasers work by completely removing the surface layer of skin to reveal a fresh new layer – it is an effective but unruly approach to skin resurfacing, often resulting in a long recovery process and much higher chance of scarring. With the UltraPulse’s fractional laser technology, we’re able to precisely target deeper layers of skin than ever before, initiating the rejuvenation process without scarring the surface.
After the recovery period is complete, it is common for patients to be amazed by the dramatic improvements to their skin’s appearance.
The UltraPulse beams that penetrate the skin have long-term results, whether a single treatment or a short course is required. Although UltraPulse is an advanced treatment it will require some time for the rejuvenation process to complete. Once the skin has shed its top layers a fresher, healthier appearance will emerge. Wrinkles look softened, the skin looks smoother and its tone becomes more even. The treatment can target the chosen area precisely, and without causing scarring or damage to the surrounding tissues.

Your Questions Answered.
Dr Nyla answers the most common UltraPulse Skin Resurfacing questions.
Am I suitable for UltraPulse laser skin treatment?
At your pre-treatment consultation, you and your practitioner will discuss your reasons for seeking treatment. The results of a health assessment, which includes sharing your medical history, will determine whether or not this treatment can be recommended for you.
UltraPulse is often suitable for both men and women who are affected by the appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin, pigmentation issues and / or minor scarring.
Is Ultrapulse laser skin resurfacing treatment safe?
Ultrapulse is considered to be one of the safest laser treatments available, and can be suitable for use on many different skin types and tones.
Depending on your requirements, the most appropriate level of laser will be used, ensuring your safety is always at the heart. This procedure may not be deemed safe for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have taken accutane within the last 3 months.
Does Ultrapulse resurfacing hurt?
This treatment does not often cause the patient to experience pain. Warmth may be felt as the procedure gets to work on the deeper layers and your practitioner will ensure you remain comfortable throughout.
Are there any side effects or risks with laser skin resurfacing?
Following the treatment, the skin may look flushed and a little swollen. The skin may feel sensitive for a few days afterwards, and the skin may also start to shed. This process will usually take up to 10 days to complete, when a fresh new surface will be unveiled.
How safe is UltraPulse laser skin resurfacing?
This treatment is the safest form of laser skin resurfacing available, and can be used on many skin types and colours. However, every patient’s skin is assessed on an individual basis to ascertain the appropriate degree of laser energy it can be exposed to. This ensures we carry out your procedure in the safest and most professional manner possible.
This treatment is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have taken Accutane within the last six months, and should consult their doctor before doing so.
Is there any aftercare to consider?
Applying SPF daily will help to protect sensitive skin from the effects of UV rays, as will avoiding prolonged periods exposed to the sun. As the old layer of skin starts to expel you should not pick at any flakes or crusts that have formed, to ensure you do not scar.
How long is a typical recovery period?
This is the most advanced skin resurfacing treatment available. However, the rejuvenation process still requires time to complete after the procedure. After treatment, swelling and redness similar to a mild sunburn may occur. It takes approximately five to seven days for the new, rejuvenated layer of skin to form. Any temporary remaining side effects can be concealed using makeup.
Post-treatment pain is minimal, and most patients return to work after a week or so. However, this is optional, as there is no medical obligation for a rest period.
It is possible that patients develop a mild breakout of peeling, scabbing and flaking as the new skin develops. These side effects are entirely normal consequences of this procedure and should disappear naturally within two weeks.
In order to ensure a smooth and effective recovery, patients should take special care of the freshly exposed layer of new skin. This includes avoiding direct sun exposure and regular application of sunscreen.
What happens during UltraPulse treatment?
This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and the time taken to perform the treatment depends on the requirements of the patient.
Once the treatment area has been fully anaesthetised, we carefully apply the laser until the entire area has been resurfaced. The damaged skin is safely removed to allow fresh, unblemished skin to develop underneath.
Depending on the treatment area, you can expect the session to last approximately 30-40 minutes. During the treatment you may feel a warm sensation as the laser is applied but you should not feel any discomfort.
