What Are Tear Troughs?
-
Tear troughs, dark circles and eye bags are common concerns for both men and women, and they can develop at various stages of life. Although they might seem similar, and might appear at the same time, these symptoms actually represent distinct conditions.
Dark circles stem from dilated blood vessels beneath the delicate skin around the eyes, and are often triggered by fatigue, dehydration or even alcohol consumption. While primarily a pigmentation issue, they frequently coincide with eye bags and tear troughs. Eye bags are caused by fluid retention beneath the eyes, causing slight swelling and casting shadows on the under-eye area. Employing cool compresses, maintaining hydration and ensuring proper sleep can mitigate or eliminate eye bags entirely.
On the other hand, tear troughs manifest as hollows under the eyes, creating shadows that can make you look tired and aged. Ageing contributes to tear troughs as the skin in this area thins, and facial fat shifts downward, casting shadows and making them look deeper. Dermal fillers are an optimal solution for tear troughs, because they boost volume and effectively fill in the hollows, resulting in a smooth, brightened, and youthful look.

Tear Trough Fillers in Mayfair, London
-
We use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers for tear trough treatments – they’re incredibly safe and biodegradable, making them perfect for treatment around the delicate eye area. HA fillers can be used safely all over the face, including underneath the eyes to create non-permanent, non-surgical lifting and smoothing, with fantastic results.
Our process begins with a thorough consultation that enables Dr Nyla and her team to assess your concerns and understand what you’re hoping for from your treatment. We can then put together a bespoke treatment plan and provide you with recommendations based on your unique facial structure and skin condition.
The goal with tear trough fillers is to ensure the eyes remain expressive, so we use a smooth filler. The treatment is administered in small amounts via specifically placed injections using a very fine needle. This produces an instant result that works to fill in the hollows beneath the eye, resulting in a subtle rejuvenation of the eye area. The skin looks fuller and smoother, dark circles and eye bags are erased, and a youthful appearance is restored.

What causes tear troughs?
-
Tear troughs can be caused by several factors, including lifestyle, lack of sleep and allergies – they can even be inherited in some cases. However, the primary reason is for these hollows forming under the eyes is age.
- Ageing: As we age, levels of collagen and elastin in the skin naturally drop, which reduces the volume and elasticity in the skin. This can make areas of the face like under the eyes look sunken and hollow, making you look older than you are.
- Lifestyle: Lifestyle habits, like smoking, poor diet or a lack of sleep, can all result in tear troughs being accentuated.
- Genetics: Dark circles and hollow under-eyes can be inherited, due to the natural structure of the face and the positioning of fat pads, which can play a role in how tear troughs look.
- Weight loss: If you’ve lost weight, you may notice that your tear troughs look more pronounced. Similarly, as we age, the fat in the face can shift or fade which creates a hollow appearance.
- Swelling or fluid retention: If you’re retaining water, dealing with sinus issues, or suffering with allergies, fluid can build up under the eyes which makes them look puffy and can emphasise tear troughs.
-
What are the benefits of tear trough fillers?
-
Men and women of any age can benefit from tear trough fillers. They offer a safe, quick and highly effective solution to lift and brighten the eye area, reducing shadows and providing a more radiant, youthful appearance. We recommend dermal fillers for tear troughs for our Mayfair patients as they’re natural-looking, won’t impede facial movements and offer a faultless safety profile for incredible results.
-
How do I know if I’m suitable for tear trough fillers?
-
Tear trough fillers may be suitable for those who are affected by the tired look of hollows beneath the eyes. This can also sometimes be accompanied by dark circles and/or eye bags. But you can achieve a more refreshed look with a bespoke treatment plan, created by Dr Nyla and her team, which will leave you looking rejuvenated and youthful.
As we age, our eye sockets can become more defined, and this can be accompanied by puffiness or dark circles. If you’re looking for a natural solution, tear trough fillers are an effective treatment that will help you achieve a more refreshed and rejuvenated look. You will have a consultation before your treatment to discuss any concerns, and we can talk through your suitability for this procedure.
-
Is tear trough filler treatment safe?
-
At our Mayfair clinic, Dr Nyla and her team use FDA-approved Hyaluronic Acid fillers which are safe to use around the delicate eye area. HA dermal fillers are biodegradable and can be used to treat several concerns on the face to subtly enhance and rejuvenate the facial features and smooth the skin.
-
Who will perform this treatment?
-
This treatment is carried out in our state-of-the-art clinics by fully qualified aesthetic practitioners. Our team has extensive experience and will ensure your appointment is relaxed and comfortable.
-
Do tear trough fillers hurt?
-
Pain is a common concern for people receiving tear trough fillers, as the delicate eye area is naturally sensitive. However, this treatment is relatively painless, as a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area beforehand to minimise discomfort. While it may be a little uncomfortable, there shouldn’t be any pain.
-
Will I experience side effects with tear trough fillers?
-
You can expect some mild to moderate swelling and redness after dermal fillers, but these are typically temporary and will disappear after a couple of days. Any risks or potential complications will be discussed with you at your consultation, along with any advice we can provide you with to reduce any discomfort.
-
Are there any risks?
-
Tear trough injections are a popular solution for combatting under-eye hollows and dark circles, and while the treatment is FDA-approved, there are always potential risks as with any injectable treatment. We are fully trained and qualified to administer this treatment as safely as possible, and we will discuss any potential risks and complications with you during your consultation to put your mind at ease.
-
What age are tear trough fillers appropriate for?
-
The right age for under-eye fillers depends on several factors, such as your age, the quality of your skin and your facial structure. You might be in your 20s or 30s and looking to tear-trough fillers to provide a refreshed appearance, or you may be older and want to restore volume loss that has developed from age.
It’s worth noting that tear trough fillers are not a permanent solution, so the results will fade over time, but we can work with you to develop a treatment plan to maintain the results you’re looking for.
-
What aftercare do you recommend?
-
Since tear trough filler treatments are completely non-surgical, there’s minimal downtime required. But there are a few ways you can speed up your recovery and prevent any complications after your treatment.
First, we recommend you avoid wearing make-up or using any skincare other than gentle cleansers at least for the first six hours, and avoid touching your face. Use warm, not hot, water on your face and ideally avoid these things until the next day.
We also advise our patients to avoid strenuous exercise, extreme heat such as saunas and steam rooms, and skip chemical exfoliants such as AHAs for around 24 hours. Lastly, avoid non-essential blood-thinning products like ibuprofen or aspirin – if you experience discomfort post-treatment, other painkillers like paracetamol are fine to take.
Mild to moderate swelling, bruising, tenderness or itching in the treatment area is common, and you may notice small red marks where the filler has been injected. These side effects should subside within a few days and will disappear completely after a few weeks. However, if you notice any extreme discomfort or your symptoms worsen, contact the clinic immediately.
-
How long do tear trough fillers last?
-
Every person is different, and this means the results of aesthetic treatments are too, but generally tear trough fillers can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. Other facts influence how long your treatment lasts too, such as the amount of filler used, your lifestyle and your metabolism as bodies with faster metabolisms may break down the filler more quickly.
