What Are Dermal Fillers?
-
As a person ages, the body begins to lose collagen. Collagen is an important substance that exists in your skin, muscles, bones and tissues. A decrease in the amount of collagen can cause skin laxity and loss of volume. The skin becomes thinner, loses its elasticity and starts to sag.
Adding volume to help smooth the texture of the skin’s surface can work effectively to soften the look of facial wrinkles, including smile lines and lip lines. As the underlying tissues of the skin lose density and facial volume loss becomes apparent, dermal fillers can restore a volumized look to sunken cheeks, tear trough furrows and hollow temples.
Acting to replace lost collagen in the skin, helps to restore a firm and full structure that effectively lifts sagging skin around the cheeks, chin and jawline. Expertly administered to follow the natural lines of the face, this enables the features to replenish their strong contouring.
As well as a treatment for rejuvenating the look of a mature face, dermal fillers can be used on the neck and décolletage, and to add volume to ageing hands or pitted scars.
This treatment can also enhance or augment certain facial features which appear naturally weaker in appearances, such as less defined cheekbones, thin lips and a weak chin / jaw. The liquid rhinoplasty (nose job) also employs the use of dermal fillers to improve the look of a misshapen nose as they help to reshape and remodel this feature.
Dr Nyla performs her dermal filler procedures at the Medispa clinics in Alderley Edge in Cheshire, Liverpool and Mayfair in London.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
-
Dermal fillers are versatile treatment that can be administered to the mid and lower parts of the face, dermal fillers can help to restore a youthfully rejuvenated look, or to enhance the natural contouring and definition of the features. The injectable gel also contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, flooding the skin with moisture to boost hydration in the skin.
As we age, our skin changes and we lose hydration as well as facial fat. Our natural skin elasticity reduces due to the degradation of collagen and our skin becomes more fragile. Because of these natural skin changes, over time the natural volume of your youthful skin begins to diminish, and wrinkles and folds start to form. The more mobile facial areas are the first to be affected by this natural ageing process. Skin will eventually begin to sag, and “expressive” wrinkles will start to appear, which are more difficult to smooth out.
Dermal fillers are a safe and effective procedure to help smooth out problem areas and tackle signs of skin ageing.

-
Do dermal fillers hurt?
-
Some minor discomfort may be experienced both during the procedure and for a short while afterwards. Dermal fillers can be administered following the application of a topical numbing cream (20 – 30 minutes before the treatment), however some products will contain a mild anaesthetic. A fine needle is used to minimise any discomfort, with any lasting tenderness settling within a matter of hours.
-
Are there any side effects or risks with dermal fillers?
-
Redness, swelling and bruising are normal effects that are to be expected immediately following the treatment. These effects are usually very minor and will have subsided in around 24 hours. Small bruises that appear where the injections were administered in the skin, can be covered with concealing make-up if the patient wishes. During the consultation session, any other potential side effects will be outlined, reducing their risk by sharing your medical history.
-
Is there any aftercare to consider?
-
The treated area will need to be left to settle following the treatment, being careful not touch or apply unnecessary pressure. For the first 6 hours, the area will need to be kept dry and you will need to avoid extremes of heat and cold.
The results can often be seen very quickly after the procedure and are found to last for up to 6 months. Your practitioner will be able to put a long-term treatment plan in place, which will enable the outcome to be maintained for as long as you desire.
