Is Aqualyx Legal in the UK?
Clinical guidance from Dr Nyla Raja MBChB (Hons), MRCGP (Dist), DFFP, DPDermatology - GMC No. 6057913
Is Aqualyx Legal in the UK?
Yes, Aqualyx can be legally supplied and used in the UK, provided the product being supplied complies with the applicable UK medical-device regulations. In Great Britain, medical devices must meet the relevant conformity, registration, and labelling requirements before they can lawfully be placed on the market. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) oversees UK medical-device regulation and market surveillance.
Aqualyx is an injectable treatment used for selected areas of localised subcutaneous fat. It is intended for body contouring rather than weight loss and should only be considered following an appropriate assessment of the treatment area, medical history, and suitability. For a more detailed explanation of the treatment mechanism, see our guide to how Aqualyx works.
Is Aqualyx MHRA Approved?
This terminology requires care. A product being legally available in the UK does not mean that it is “MHRA approved”.
The MHRA specifically states in its medical-device registration guidance that registration does not represent accreditation, certification, approval, or endorsement by the agency. Medical devices supplied in Great Britain instead need to satisfy the relevant regulatory requirements, including appropriate conformity marking and MHRA registration where required.
CE-marked medical devices can currently continue to be placed on the Great Britain market under transitional arrangements, with the permitted period depending on the regulatory route under which the device was certified.
Why Is Aqualyx Sometimes Described as “Not Approved” Online?
Much of the confusion comes from information published in the United States.
The US Food and Drug Administration states that Aqualyx is not FDA approved in the United States. That is a statement about US regulation and does not, by itself, determine whether a product can legally be supplied in the UK.
UK patients should therefore look at the product’s UK regulatory status rather than relying on American references to FDA approval.
Does Legal Mean Completely Risk-Free?
No. Legal availability does not mean that Aqualyx is suitable for every patient or every area of fat.
Fat-dissolving injections involve placing an injectable product into subcutaneous tissue. Aqualyx side effects can include swelling, tenderness, bruising, and inflammation around the treatment area. Appropriate anatomical assessment, injection technique, product handling, and management of potential complications remain important.
The MHRA’s medical-device safety guidance makes clear that no medical device is 100% safe or reliable and that known risks of complications must be considered alongside the potential benefits.
Aqualyx should not be viewed as a general weight-loss treatment. It is considered for selected pockets of localised fat where the anatomy and treatment objective are suitable.
What Should Patients Check Before Having Aqualyx?
Before undergoing Aqualyx fat-dissolving treatment, patients should understand which product is being used, why it is appropriate for the treatment area, who will perform the injections, what training they have, the expected number of sessions, potential adverse effects, and what clinical support is available afterwards. Our guide to Aqualyx results and treatment sessions explains how results develop, why more than one session may be required, and why treatment plans vary between patients.
Cost should also be considered in the context of the complete treatment plan rather than the advertised price of a single appointment. Our guide to Aqualyx costs in the UK explains typical prices and the factors that can affect the overall cost of treatment.
At Dr Nyla Medispa, treatment suitability is assessed within a doctor-led, medically regulated clinic. A consultation allows the distribution of localised fat, skin quality, anatomy, medical history, and realistic treatment expectations to be reviewed before deciding whether Aqualyx is appropriate.
Is Aqualyx Legal in the UK? The Key Point
Aqualyx is not prohibited in the UK. It can be supplied and used where the product complies with the relevant UK regulatory requirements. However, describing it simply as “MHRA approved” would be inaccurate because MHRA device registration does not constitute approval or endorsement of a medical device.
The more useful patient questions are whether the product has been sourced through appropriate channels, whether treatment is suitable for the individual, and whether it is being provided by an appropriately trained practitioner within a setting capable of managing complications.
