How long do dermal eye fillers last? | What you should know about tear trough treatment

Dermal fillers are a popular non-invasive treatment that can be applied in various parts of the face, including the cheeks, the lips, and under the eyes, or “tear trough treatment”. These temporary procedures are good alternatives to plastic surgery and are becoming increasingly common in mainstream society. Most recently, popular singer Katy Perry stated she underwent filler treatment “for the hollowing” and dark circles in the eye area.

This guide will look at what tear trough fillers are, the longevity of dermal eye fillers, and what you should consider before seeking treatment.

What is tear trough filler?

Tear troughs are the physical hollow in the eye area that cast a shadow onto the midface area. Unlike dark circles and under-eye bags, which are also common problems, tear troughs are typically harder to cover and reduce.

Dermal fillers, specifically designed for under the eyes, can address tear troughs and add volume from beneath the skin. The injections are applied to fill the hollowed area with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid; creating a smooth and more youthful appearance.

What factors impact tear troughs?

These eye concerns often occur naturally due to ageing. As we get older, the skin becomes thinner and facial fats and wrinkles descend underneath the eye area. This is what causes the dark shadows which typically become apparent in our 30s and 40s.

However, tear troughs are not just brought on by ageing. In younger people, such as those in their 20s, there are certain genetic conditions that also bring this physical hollow. This includes the facial bone structure, how the blood vessels operate underneath the skin, and pigmentation.

How long do the results of under eye treatment last?

In tear trough filler injections, there is a strong presence of hyaluronic acid. This substance is naturally produced in the body and is absorbed over a period. Consequently, dermal fillers are a temporary solution to this facial concern as the filler will naturally dissolve.

Tear trough filler treatment lasts anywhere from 9 to 12 months. This type of dermal filler typically lasts longer than other treatments, such as lip fillers, as there is less movement underneath the eyes, meaning the fillers remain undisturbed.

If you are thinking about getting tear trough filler injections, it is important that you go to a reliable clinic with medically qualified practitioners. As dermal fillers are under regulated in the UK, anybody can perform them, which can lead to sub-optimal or botched results.

How long is the recovery time for under eye fillers?

After the treatment, the patient will be able to see results almost immediately. However, there will be a certain amount of swelling around the injection site which is a completely natural side effect to tear trough fillers. Swelling will reduce gradually, and the patient will be able to see the finished look after 3 to 4 weeks.

To aid the recovery process, at Dr Nyla, we recommend utilising certain practices so that no problems or complications arise. These include:

Top Tip Why is this? Instead
Avoid touching your face. Touching the treatment area can lead to infection. There is also the risk of dislodging the filler and moving it around. Avoid touching underneath your eyes for at least six hours after treatment.

We also recommend not wearing any makeup for 24 hours after treatment.

Avoid using skincare that contains Hydroxy Acids or Vitamin C. We recommend avoiding wearing any skincare immediately after treatment.

After you have recovered, avoid wearing any skincare that contains Hydroxy Acids or Vitamin C.

For 6 hours after your treatment, use warm water to wash your face.

After your recovery, make sure to use skincare that has no harmful ingredients included.

At Dr Nyla, we stock our very own Eye Cream that helps reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines.

Shop the Dr Nyla’s Illuminate Eye Cream.

Avoid drinking alcohol. Make sure you do not drink alcohol before the treatment, the day of, or 24 hours after the treatment.

This is because alcohol thins the bloods and increases the risk of bleeding, bruising and swelling during the recovery process.

Instead, ensure you are drinking enough water to stay hydrated and help enhance the final look.

After the treatment, your practitioner will be able to provide you with a long-term treatment plan to follow.

Avoid extreme heats. Avoid places like the gym altogether, as this type of environment is harmful and can be full of bacteria.

This is because excessive sweating can cause adverse reactions following the treatment.

For 24 hours after your treatment, make sure to avoid places of high heat, such as gyms, tanning beds, and steam rooms.
Avoid blood thinning medications. This includes pain killers such as aspirin and ibuprofen, for at least two weeks. Use paracetamol to ease any pain.

If you experience any problems following the treatment, or simply would like further information, make sure to contact Dr Nyla who will be able to answer any questions.

How often do dermal eye fillers need to be topped up?

As dermal eye fillers tend to last between 9 and 12 months, it is recommended that you top these up once a year. However, this is only a generalisation, as this all depends specifically on the client. Certain factors that can determine how often fillers are topped up include the age of the patient, their facial structure and their lifestyle.

Make sure to talk to a qualified practitioner who has medical credentials and experience in this field.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly will I see results from tear trough filler?

After tear trough filler treatment, you will be able to see results instantaneously. However, swelling and bruising are to be expected and these side effects will gradually reduce in the following weeks. Find out more about what are dermal fillers at the Dr Nyla website.

What is the best dermal filler for the under eye area?

Although there are other types of dermal fillers available, the most common are hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance in the body that, as the body ages, we stop producing as much. This may lead to dehydration, lack of volume and a deepening of wrinkles.
